New Bedford Custom House
When it opened, the New Bedford Custom House also accomodated a post office, which was perhaps the reason the building contractor superimposed a monumental Doric portico on Mills's facade. Without it the building would resemble the Newburyport structure. One also wonders how the added cost of four giant columns was handled by the always frugal authorities in Washington.
